	Synopsis: Lacey has fallen for Jess, who works for her father. Lacey's mother likes Jess, but Lacey's father thinks he's a wrong 'un. Lacey's father is killed, and Lacey announces that she killed him. Matt doesn't want to take Lacey to jail, but Lacey's mother won't have her in the house any longer, so Ma Smalley becomes her custodian. Matt tries to reassure Lacey, telling her he's never seen a woman hanged. Meanwhile, Jess takes up again with the girl he was seeing before he met Lacey; that girl is poor, Lacey is the daughter of a prosperous farmer. When Lacey learns about the other woman from Ma Smalley, Lacey--and what Matt said about the hanging of women--may be put to the test.
